Week One Update
What we fixed, what we found, and what happens next
25 September 2026
Week one in three sentences
01
We stopped the money leaving
$10,692 a year of wasted spend switched off: $7,861 on searches that were never going to buy, plus $2,831 on adverts placed outside Google.
02
We made the numbers trustworthy
The account reported 1,265 enquiries for the year. Only 392 were real, which moves the true cost of each from $27 to $88.40.
03
We set a starting line
Twelve months of history is now frozen, so every future change can be measured against it.

Fix one: adverts on other people's websites
Two campaigns were showing adverts on third-party sites rather than on Google. That traffic behaved nothing like real buyers.
What was happening
45% of the people shown these adverts clicked them. A strong advert on Google gets clicked five to ten percent of the time. A rate that high is not people making decisions.
What it cost
$2,831
Spent there over the year. In the last 90 days it had grown to 22% of all spend. Now switched off.
Fix two: what was being counted
Your account counted enquiries by letting Google guess. It was not connected to your contact form at all.
Where that guess was firing

And what it explains
For ten days in October 2025, the account recorded enquiries that never happened.
873
Enquiries recorded in ten days, from $3,085 of spend. That is 69% of the entire year, in the second cheapest month.
128
Recorded on 15 October alone, from $88 of spend. Under 70 cents each, for projects worth millions.
Now corrected
A new measurement is connected directly to your contact form. It runs alongside the old one for three weeks so the two can be compared before we switch over.
Evidence
The new measurement, confirmed working
We submitted a test enquiry through your contact form and watched it register live.
Every green tick is a condition that had to be true: the right form, the right event, the right account. It now fires on the real contact form, and nowhere else on the site.

Fix three: who you were paying to reach
These are real searches Journey paid to appear for, over the last 12 months.
Free logo tools
People looking for a free logo generator, not an experience design partner.
Freelance marketplaces
Searches for sites where people hire freelancers by the hour.
Software and AI tools
People shopping for design software, not for a studio.

How to start a clothing brand. How to open a cosmetics company.

of spend now blocked across 1,018 search terms. That is 33% of everything Google let us see.

Campaigns previously unprotected: Story, Technology and Strategy
Half the campaigns had no filter at all
A block list did exist, but it covered only three of the six live campaigns, and it was written in a way that catches one exact phrase rather than a whole family of searches.
Before
Fifteen blocked phrases, applied to three campaigns. The other three, which spent more than $13,900 between them, had nothing.
Now
90 blocked terms, written to catch every variation, applied to all six live campaigns.
Evidence
Every live campaign now filtered
The block list went from 15 terms on 3 campaigns to 90 terms on all six.

Fix four: one campaign was told to overpay
You tell Google what an enquiry is worth paying for, and it bids accordingly. One campaign was authorised to pay SEVEN times more than it needed to.

One question we need answered
Did something change on the website in November 2025?
Three things happened at the same time that month: several pages stopped appearing in Google searches overnight, the monthly budget tripled, and the cost of each enquiry jumped from $39 to $109. If one event caused all three, it explains most of what we are seeing.

Things we noticed, for your web team
These sit outside what you have engaged us for. We are flagging them because they affect how well the advertising can work.
Pages that no longer exist
Several service pages, plus the About and Careers pages, return an error. They were appearing in Google searches until November 2025.
62 empty pages
Your website is submitting pages to Google that contain nothing at all, named after each of your services and sectors.
Two pages doing one job
What We Do and Our Services have almost identical content and compete with each other in search results.
What we need from you
01
Does the Squint / Opera account belong in this engagement?
It is a separate advertising account, and both of its campaigns show the same measurement problem we have just fixed here.
02
What changed on the website in November 2025?
Anyone who was involved in a redesign, migration or restructure around that date.
03
Who reads the enquiries when they arrive?
Fifteen minutes a month with that person, marking each enquiry as good, poor or irrelevant, changes every decision we make about where the budget goes.

Next week
Week two is about bringing the spend in line with what we agreed, and confirming the new measurement is reliable.
Mon to Tue
Daily budgets reviewed
Today's daily limits would allow far more than the level we agreed. We bring them down to match.
Tue to Wed
Five hidden settings switched off
Five measurements sitting at zero are configured to influence bidding. If any starts recording, Google would chase document downloads as if they were business.
Thu
New measurement confirmed
Check the new enquiry count against the old one, and report the difference.
Fri
Reporting dashboard
A single live view of spend, enquiries and cost per enquiry that you can open at any time.

Please expect this
Between weeks three and six, the numbers will look worse before they look better.
When the measurement is rebuilt, Google's bidding system starts learning again from scratch. This is expected and temporary. It is also why we will report on 90-day windows rather than month to month: at this volume, a single month is noise.
